This exciting multimedia production from Ground Zero Productions celebrates the history of working people in Alberta through songs written and performed by Juno-nominated songwriter Maria Dunn. The songs, which have been captured beautifully on Dunn's We Were Good People CD, arose from interviews and research she conducted during an artist residency sponsored by the Edmonton District Labour Council and Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Throughout the show, themes of resilience and hope are interwoven with tales of immigration, internment and The Depression, as superb musical performances are intertwined with slides and sound clips from interviews with elder members of Alberta's labour community.
A storyteller through song, Maria Dunn is an arrestingly powerful singer-songwriter. She combines North American folk and country music with the influences of her Celtic heritage. Born in Scotland and raised in Alberta, she writes songs inspired by historical and contemporary characters, capturing their struggles and triumphs in her lyrics. In 2002, Maria received a Juno Award nomination in the Roots/Traditional Solo category for her CD, For a Song. Her new project, We Were Good People, explores the stories of working people in western Canada—tales of resilience and hope. Expect a thought-provoking performance from Maria at Alberta Scene!
