Lorrie Matheson

When MuchMusic needed a local icon to be the ‘man with the microphone’ during a special on Calgary’s music scene, they looked to Lorrie Matheson. An artist who has performed in high-profile bands like Fire Engine Red and National Dust, Matheson has played rock clubs, acoustic music rooms, and huge outdoor stages, which he’s shared with the likes of the Violent Femmes and Wilco among others. He can make you laugh one minute, cry the next, and flip the bird to “the man” a little while later. He has no fear of saying what he means, whether an acerbic stab at political tomfoolery or a simple love song to a spouse or parent. Hear Lorrie tell it—and sing it—like it is during Alberta Scene! Rae Spoon

Born and raised in Alberta, Rae Spoon is a unique artist who defies stereotypes by mixing an old-fashioned song-writing style (read Woodie Guthrie and Hank Williams) with the perspective of a 22-year-old. Since emerging onto the music scene in 2001, Rae has built an incredibly diverse following. From a punk show with Winnipeg legends, Propagandhi, to folk festival workshops with peers such as The Be Good Tanyas, Rae has won over many unsuspecting audiences. Over the past two summers, Rae has performed at numerous festivals. At the Vancouver Folk Festival, all of Rae’s CD's sold out before the set was completed.

Rae Spoon is a winner of CBC's Galaxie Rising Star Award
