Lorrie Matheson

When MuchMusic needed a local icon to be the ‘man with the microphone’ during a special on Calgary’s music scene, they looked to Lorrie Matheson. An artist who has performed in high-profile bands like Fire Engine Red and National Dust, Matheson has played rock clubs, acoustic music rooms, and huge outdoor stages, which he’s shared with the likes of the Violent Femmes and Wilco among others. He can make you laugh one minute, cry the next, and flip the bird to “the man” a little while later. He has no fear of saying what he means, whether an acerbic stab at political tomfoolery or a simple love song to a spouse or parent. Hear Lorrie tell it—and sing it—like it is during Alberta Scene! The Swiftys

The pride of Alberta, The Swiftys have been termed ‘old-school country’ and ‘modern outlaws’. Since coming together in the spring of 2002, The Swiftys have shared the stage with the likes of The Sadies, Fred Eaglesmith, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, and The Corb Lund Band among others. The band is fronted by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Shawn ‘Swifty’ Jonasson (Old Reliable, House of Payne and more). Backing Shawn on upright/electric bass and vocals is Jody ‘Thump’ Johnson, a seasoned veteran despite his youth. Grant ‘Stovetop’ Stovel, who also sits in with Sue Foley, is on the drum kit.
